Classes & subjects

Your school’s structure, set up once.

Classes, sections, class teachers and subjects. Registers, timetables, results and promotion all build on them.

An example school. Adding JSS 3 at position 3 moves the senior classes down one place.

Classes and sections

One class. As many sections as you run.

Name sections the way your school does, from A and B to Science and Arts.

  • Sections you can change later. Choose which sections a class is split into when you add it, and adjust them as the school grows.

  • Sizes from real enrolment. Each section shows how many students are enrolled in it, so there is no separate capacity to keep up to date.

  • Skills assessment by class. Where junior assessment is in use, choose whether a class is assessed on skills. Turning it on gives the class every active skills category.

A fictional class gains a third section. Turning on skills assessment gives it the school’s active skills categories.

Class teachers

A class teacher for every section.

Assign the teacher responsible for each class and section.

  • Reassign in one step. Move a teacher to a different class, or swap who looks after one, without removing and re-adding anyone.

  • Named where it matters. Class teachers appear beside their class on the attendance dashboard, so follow-up goes to the right person.

  • Nothing removed by accident. Removing a class teacher asks for confirmation first.

A teacher moves to another class in one change, and the class she leaves gets a new class teacher. Names are fictional.

Subjects

The standard subject list, in one step.

Start from the Nigerian curriculum instead of typing every subject.

  • See it before it happens. A preview lists the subjects that will be added and the names that will be tidied. Subjects already on file are skipped and nothing is deleted.

  • Consistent names. Common short forms such as Maths, Govt and Agric become Mathematics, Government and Agricultural Science.

  • No internet needed. The list is built into SMS, so it works on a school server that is offline.

  • Your own subjects too. Add any subject with a code and a type: Mandatory, Optional, Theory or Practical.

An example preview: new subjects are listed, short forms are renamed to their standard names, and subjects already on file are left alone.

Subjects for each class

Each class gets its own subjects.

Assign subjects to every class and section. Timetables and exam schedules use the same list.

  • One list, used everywhere. Only subjects assigned to a class and section can be placed on its timetable, and its exam schedule lists the same subjects.

  • Bring last session’s subjects forward. Copy the previous session’s assignments into a new one. SMS shows what will be copied first, and only copies into a session that has none yet.

An example new session. The preview says what will be copied before anything is written.

Retiring a class or subject

Stop offering it. Keep its history.

When your school stops running a class or subject, archive it instead of deleting it.

  • Records stay intact. Marks, enrolments and timetables that refer to an archived class keep working. It is simply no longer offered.

  • Reversible in a click. Restore an archived class or subject whenever you need it.

  • A clear warning before deleting. Deleting a class tells you how many students are still enrolled in it before anything happens.

Archiving a class the school no longer runs keeps everything that refers to it. Deleting one warns about enrolled students first. Example classes.

Classes & subjects questions

Setting up the structure everything else depends on.

Still have a question?

Yes. Sections can carry any name, so a class can be split into A and B, or into Science, Arts and Commercial.
